As I prepare for this sacred season, I have been reading This Is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared by Rabbi Alan Lew. He offers a compelling insight: the Days of Awe are not primarily about judgment; they are about awakening. Elul, the month of preparation, is the gentle beginning of that awakening, inviting us into a sacred journey of reflection, honesty, and renewal before we reach Rosh Hashanah.

The daily sound of the shofar interrupts the routines of our lives and asks a simple yet profound question: How are you living? Rather than calling us to fear, it calls us to awareness. Lew reminds us that spiritual transformation begins not when we have all the answers, but when we are willing to pay attention to ourselves, to those we love, and to God's quiet presence in our lives. Are you?

Elul teaches that lasting change rarely comes through dramatic moments. More often, it grows through small, faithful practices: offering forgiveness, seeking reconciliation, expressing gratitude, making time for prayer, and honestly facing our imperfections. These daily acts prepare our hearts for the holy work of the High Holy Days. When we are able to turn quiet moments into a deep path toward renewal and return, we will be able to create a new year of many blessings.

The invitation of Elul is not to become someone else, but to become more fully the person God created us to be, shaped each day by grace, compassion, and the courage to begin again.
